Dr. Gonzalo Tardáguila de la Fuente talks about the importance of continuing education and the opportunities offered by the arrival of new MRI equipment thanks to European funds.
Dr. Gonzalo Tardáguila de la Fuente, member of the Scientific Committee of the III Jornadas Seram-ARRS. Advances in MRI, held in A Coruña, talks about the importance of continuous training and the opportunities offered by the arrival of new MRI equipment thanks to European funds. He also analyzes the evolution of radiology and highlights the importance of artificial intelligence in the specialty, which is going to benefit radiologists and patients. "Artificial intelligence is not going to make radiology disappear, but it is going to develop it much more. We have to learn to work with it," he assures. |
What were the most outstanding topics of the III Jornadas Seram-ARRS 2023. Advances in magnetic resonance?
The most outstanding feature of the III Seram-ARRS Conference has been that it has had a very transversal scientific program, where all the topics have been dealt with. In the specialty of radiology there is an increasing tendency to compartmentalize and divide by anatomical areas. Some people do neuro, others abdomen, but in this conference all fields have been addressed in a very symmetrical way.
How important are conferences of this kind in contributing to the continuing education of radiology specialists?
Within radiology, magnetic resonance is probably the technique that evolves the most and it depends on the knowledge that technicians and radiologists have. It is essential to be always up to date in MRI and to know the latest sequences and advances. In this forum we have shared knowledge from other areas and specialties. This kind of conference is very useful to keep you up to date and to be able to get the most out of the equipment we have today.
"It is essential to always be up to date in MRI and to know the latest sequences and advances".
What are the challenges presented by the arrival of new MRI equipment derived from the European Technology Renewal Plan?
The Seram-ARRS Conference comes at a very positive and important time. The European funds have enabled a renewal of the MRI technological park throughout Spain. Magnetic resonance is a modality that is very sensitive to how it is handled by the radiologist. At a time when we are going to have new high-end equipment, these conferences help us to be able to optimize them and that patients benefit not only from the best machines, but also from the best sequences and the best knowledge on the part of the machine operators.

How has radiology evolved in recent years?
Radiology has evolved a lot and very fast. Clinicians need more and more radiological examinations. In recent years the number of scans has increased significantly. In addition, radiology is a very technological specialty and has had important advances such as the digitalization of images. Before, radiologists used to see X-rays on film, whereas now everything is digital. Artificial intelligence will be a great help for radiologists, facilitating the processes and for the patient, who will have better, faster and probably more homogeneous diagnoses.
"The number of radiological scans has increased very significantly in recent years".
Is the radiology specialty sufficiently valued considering the role it plays in the healthcare process?
Radiology is highly valued within the care circle, since we provide service to the whole hospital and to the different specialties. Any clinician who requests a radiological examination is aware of its importance. There are many specialties that are interested in imaging and the radiologist is playing an increasingly central role in committees and multidisciplinary meetings.
Radiologists have to gain visibility for the patient. On many occasions the patient does not know that the diagnosis of his disease, which is communicated to him by his surgeon or physician, has been reached thanks to an imaging test and that the radiologist has been the one to say whether or not he has, for example, cancer. For this reason, the work of radiologists in this type of conference and of the scientific societies is to make the radiologist more visible to the general population. It is important for patients to understand that, in addition to the doctor in front of them, there are other doctors such as radiologists who are essential for the diagnosis to be correct.

How do you see the future of radiology?
The radiology specialty has a great future. It is one of the most technological specialties and the future is eminently technological. There are many fears about artificial intelligence. In the lists of jobs that are going to disappear due to artificial intelligence, radiology always appears. However, artificial intelligence is not going to make radiology disappear, but it is going to develop it much more. Therefore, we have to learn to work with it because it will serve to help us and improve.
